How much does it cost to dispose of a mattress?
Mattress disposal with RLE Waste Clearance costs £10 plus VAT for each mattress, added to the price of the load it goes in. The load is priced by the space it takes in the truck, from £60 plus VAT for a minimum load of 1 cubic yard, which is about 10 bin bags or one armchair.
Most mattress jobs come with something else: a bed frame, a headboard, a wardrobe or a few bags from a spare room. They all go in the same load, with only the mattress carrying the extra charge, and the crew, loading, transport and disposal are included. Send a photo of everything and your postcode on WhatsApp (07534 244774) or through the quote form, and the price is confirmed before we come, with no obligation.

What do councils charge to collect a mattress?
Councils charge a fee for bulky collections that take mattresses, and they only collect from outside, so you carry the mattress out and wait for a collection date. For a single mattress you can get to the front of the house, a council collection is a sensible option.
Lewisham's bulky collection (external site) charges £5 per item, including mattresses, and doesn't collect from inside properties. People in flats have to leave items at the front of the building, and the fee isn't refunded if you cancel. Bromley's bulky collection (external site) starts at £43, priced by the number and type of items, and collects within 10 working days of payment from the front of the property, not the road. Bromley gives one free collection a year to people claiming Universal Credit or Housing Benefit, so check that first if it applies to you.
When does a mattress collection from RLE make more sense?
A mattress collection from RLE makes more sense when the mattress is in an upper-floor flat with a narrow stair, when there's no front garden to leave it in, or when it's one of several items from a clear-out.
- Several items: mattresses, frames and other furniture all go in one load, priced by space, with the mattress charge added per mattress.
- Upper floors: tell us the floor and whether there's a lift, and we'll plan the job before we arrive.
- No waiting: the mattress goes on the visit we've agreed, so it isn't sitting in a hallway or front garden for days.
- End of tenancy: landlords and agents can clear a room or a whole flat in one visit, with a waste transfer note and a receipt for the paperwork.
We collect mattresses across Chislehurst, Bromley, Lewisham and nearby. For a bigger clear-out, see our flat clearance and house clearance pages.
Want a price for yours? Send a photo on WhatsApp and we'll tell you the load size and the price.
Which mattresses can't you take?
We can't take a mattress that counts as clinical waste, such as one from a care or medical setting that's been contaminated with bodily fluids, as that needs a clinical waste service. Ordinary used mattresses from homes, rentals and holiday lets are fine, and so is a mattress with bed bugs, as long as it's wrapped and sealed in plastic first.
Payment is on completion by card, cash or bank transfer, and you'll get a waste transfer note and a receipt. We're an upper tier registered waste carrier, broker and dealer, number CBDU175566, which you can check on the Environment Agency register (external site). The gov.uk carrier check (external site) works for any collector you're thinking of using.

Your council will usually collect a mattress through its bulky collection, for a fee and from outside only. Lewisham charges £5 per item, including mattresses, and people in flats bring items to the front of the building. Bromley starts at £43, collects from the front of the property within 10 working days of payment, and charges another £43 for late cancellation.
A mattress can sometimes go for free through a council bulky collection. Bromley gives one free collection a year to people claiming Universal Credit or Housing Benefit, and since 1 June 2026 Merton (external site) collects up to 3 bulky items free, once a year per household. Where neither applies, RLE Waste Clearance collects from inside the home for a set charge per mattress.
The bed frame can go in the same load as the mattress, along with divan bases and headboards, priced by the space they take. Only the mattress carries the extra charge. If the frame is easier to move in pieces, take it apart before we arrive, or tell us and we'll allow time for it.
A mattress doesn't need cutting up or folding before we arrive, because the two-person crew carries it out whole, and it only needs wrapping if it has bed bugs. Leave it where it is, or by the front door if that's easier for you, and point the crew to it on the day. The crew handles the carrying and loading, and that time is built into the price.
A mattress with bed bugs can go, as long as it's wrapped and sealed in plastic before the crew arrives. RLE Waste Clearance takes it at the usual £10 plus VAT per mattress, on top of the load. Wrap it in the room where it is, so it isn't carried through the house uncovered, and mention the bed bugs when you send the photo so the crew knows what to expect.
A mattress can be collected from an upper-floor flat, because two people carry it down the stairs. Tell us the floor and whether there's a lift when you send the photo, so we can plan it. Loading time is built into the price, and if a job needs longer, extra labour is £30 plus VAT per 30 minutes, agreed before we start.
A mattress can be collected 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, and if you book before 12pm the job's done the same day, so it isn't left in a hallway or front garden waiting for a council date. Send a photo and your postcode on WhatsApp (07534 244774), along with anything else that's going, so it all goes in one load.
You don't need to be home for a mattress collection if the mattress is somewhere the crew can reach, such as a front garden, a driveway or a porch, or if there's a key safe and you've told us where it is. Agree the price first on WhatsApp or by phone, then pay on completion by card, cash or bank transfer.
