Fridge disposal

Fridge disposal and freezer collection

To get rid of an old fridge in Bromley or south-east London, RLE Waste Clearance's fridge disposal costs £60 plus VAT in total for a fridge or fridge freezer collected on its own. The two-person crew carries it out of the kitchen, garage or upstairs flat, with transport and disposal included. Send a photo on WhatsApp for a price.

How much does it cost to dispose of a fridge?

Fridge disposal with RLE Waste Clearance costs £60 plus VAT in total for a fridge or fridge freezer collected on its own. An upright freezer is also £60 plus VAT, while chest freezers, American fridge freezers and commercial fridges such as display chillers are £90 plus VAT each.

A fridge going out with other rubbish adds its charge on top of that load, and so does each freezer or commercial fridge. An air con unit is £30 plus VAT. The crew, loading, transport and disposal are included either way. Send a photo and your postcode on WhatsApp (07534 244774), or call 020 8611 2586, and the full price is confirmed before we come, with no obligation.

What we take

Fridges and freezers we collect

  • Under-counter fridges and freezers
  • Tall and American-style fridge freezers
  • Chest freezers
  • Wine coolers and mini fridges
  • Portable and wall-mounted air con units
  • Commercial display chillers, bottle coolers and catering fridges

Please empty them of food and drink first. We can't take chemicals or hazardous waste.

Why are fridges handled separately?

Fridges, freezers and air con units are handled separately because they contain refrigerant gases, and the foam insulation in older models can hold similar gases. If a unit is crushed or broken open with general scrap, those gases escape into the air. That's why fridges and freezers go through a separate treatment process instead of being treated as ordinary metal, and why there's a set charge for each unit.

The same treatment capacity is under pressure nationally. Dartford Borough Council's bulky collection (external site) currently won't take fridges or freezers, citing "a national lack of availability at treatment plants". If you're in Dartford and need one gone, our Dartford page covers what else the council can and can't collect.

What's the difference between a domestic and a commercial fridge?

A domestic fridge is anything from a kitchen or utility room, such as an under-counter fridge, a tall fridge freezer or a small wine cooler, and it's £60 plus VAT, the same as an upright freezer. A chest freezer in the garage is £90 plus VAT, an American fridge freezer is £90 plus VAT, and a portable or wall-mounted air con unit is £30 plus VAT.

Commercial fridges are the larger units used by shops, pubs, cafés and kitchens, such as glass-fronted display chillers, bottle coolers and catering fridges. Each one is £90 plus VAT on top of the load. If you're not sure which rate applies, send a photo and we'll tell you. Businesses can pay by card, bank transfer or company cheque, or ask for an invoice, and commercial accounts are available, subject to credit checks.

Want a price for yours? Send a photo on WhatsApp and we'll tell you the load size and the price.

Will the councils near you collect a fridge?

Some councils near you collect fridges and some don't, and the bulky services in Lewisham and Bromley only collect from outside.

  • Dartford: the council's bulky collection currently excludes fridges and freezers.
  • Lewisham: the bulky collection (external site) charges £25 for a fridge or freezer, won't collect American-style or double-door models, and only collects from outside.
  • Bromley: the bulky collection (external site) starts at £43, priced by the number and type of items, and collects from the front of the property within 10 working days of payment.

Our fridge disposal and freezer collection covers Bromley, Chislehurst, Dartford and Lewisham, and we can take other furniture and rubbish in the same load.

How do I get a fridge ready to go?

To get a fridge ready, switch it off and empty it a day before the collection, so it has time to defrost and you can wipe out the water. Take out any loose glass shelves, or tape the door shut, so nothing slides about while it's moved.

You don't need to be home if the fridge is somewhere we can reach, such as a front garden, a driveway or a porch with a key safe, and you've told us where it is. You pay on completion by card, cash or bank transfer, and you'll get a waste transfer note and a receipt. We're an upper tier registered waste carrier, broker and dealer, number CBDU175566, on the Environment Agency register (external site). If the fridge is going with a washing machine, a cooker or other appliances, our white goods collection page explains how mixed appliance loads are priced.

The extra charge for a fridge covers the separate treatment it needs. Fridges and freezers contain refrigerant gases, and older ones have insulation foam that can hold similar gases, so they're handled apart from other waste to stop those gases escaping. That costs more than ordinary disposal, which is why RLE Waste Clearance charges £60 plus VAT for each fridge or fridge freezer on top of the load.

A commercial fridge and an American fridge freezer are charged the same, £90 plus VAT each, and so is a chest freezer. A standard fridge, fridge freezer or upright freezer is £60 plus VAT. When any of them goes with other rubbish, its charge sits on top of the load. Send RLE Waste Clearance a photo of each unit and we'll confirm which price applies before we come.

Your council may collect an old fridge, but the rules vary by borough. Dartford's bulky collection currently won't take fridges or freezers. Lewisham charges £25 per fridge or freezer but won't take American-style or double-door models. Bromley's bulky collection starts at £43 and only collects from the front of the property. RLE Waste Clearance collects from inside the home.

A shop selling you a new fridge must offer a free way to dispose of your old one, as long as it does the same job, either in store or through a take-back scheme (gov.uk (external site)). A retailer can charge to collect the old fridge from your home. If the old fridge isn't being replaced, or it's going with other rubbish, we can collect it.

A freezer should be defrosted first if you can. Switch it off and empty it the day before so the ice has time to melt, then wipe out the water, as a freezer that's still defrosting can leak on the way out. If that isn't possible, mention it when you book with RLE Waste Clearance and the crew will plan around it.

You don't need to bring the fridge outside, because RLE Waste Clearance's two-person crew carries it out from the kitchen, utility room, garage or an upstairs flat. Don't leave a fridge on the pavement for someone to take, as dumped appliances count as fly-tipping (external site). If you won't be home, a front garden, driveway or porch with a key safe is fine, as long as you've told us where it is.

Several fridges can be collected from a shop or pub in one visit. Each commercial fridge is £90 plus VAT on top of the load, and any other waste from the clear-out goes in the same load. Send photos of everything that's going and the total is confirmed before we arrive. Commercial accounts are available, subject to credit checks.

An old fridge can be collected 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, and if you book before 12pm the job's done the same day. Switch it off and empty it as early as you can so it has time to defrost. Send a photo and your postcode on WhatsApp (07534 244774), and say if it's a large or double-door model so the crew can plan for it.
